Bang & Olufsen – AYC Vodice Cup 2017

29th April-5th May

The 3rd annual Vodice Cup started on Saturday 29th April as guests arrived during the afternoon at the Vodice, Croatia base.  10 boats had been prepared by the base staff for what was to be the most competitive racing that this event has seen.

After a Welcome Drinks and Buffet at the Bistro Leut on the Saturday evening, hosted by AYC Managing Director Frank Honan, all the crews were introduced to each other.

DAY 1 Sunday 30th April 2017

Breakfast at Bistro Leut was followed by the Skipper’s briefing by Race Officer John Plumb who outlined the plan for the week. The proposal was for Sunday to be a practise day, with the crews meeting  up in the evening at Konoba Aldura on Zlarin island for dinner.  All 8 of the AYC Elan 431 fleet were entered, together with Bavaria 44 ‘Alma 3’ and Sun Odyssey 43DS ‘Gabriela 1’. The 10 boats would sail as a single fleet, all starting at the same time, with a handicap system to adjust for the different classes.  After explaining the start line countdown and flag procedure, John left the skippers to complete their boat check-in and crew lists and complete their preparations for departure.

DAY 2 Monday 1st May 2017

Once again after breakfast the skippers had to report to Race Control at 09:30hrs for a briefing from the Race  Officer, this time on the quayside on Zlarin. Race 1, starting at about 11:00 hrs would take the fleet from the Zlarin area to the area between the islands of Krapije and Kakan, with the crews meeting in the evening on the town quay at Krapije.

Day 2 Tuesday 2nd May 2017

Race 2 took the fleet from the Kakan/Kaprije area eastwards, north of Kaprje and Zmajan and round two marks before finishing south of Tijat island. The evening meeting point was in Prvic Luka.

Day 3 Wednesday 3rd May 2017

Race 3 started west of Zlarin took the fleet northwest to the top of Kaprije then northeast across the Muterski  Kanal before being shortened at the north end of Tijat.  Crews returned to Vodice that evening.

Day 4 Thursday 4th May 2017

Sponsor Hotel Punta provided breakfast for the competitors in their Sky Bar overlooking the Vodice Bay. The forecast for Thursday was for very little wind, so the Race Committee took advantage and declared a rest day.

Day 5 Friday 5th May 2017

Race 4 After a short delay waiting for the wind to settle, the race finally started at 12.20hrs, using an Olympic style ‘up and down’ course to a windward mark, returning to the start/finish line, 2 laps. The course was only about 4 miles, which all the 10 boats completed in between 43 and 56 minutes, a short, close race.  This allowed time for a second race of the day:

Race 5 which repeated one lap of the Olympic style course followed by a lap, counter clockwise, of Tijat island.  Boats then returned to Vodice.

Prizes were awarded at the Prize-giving dinner at Hotel Punta as follows:

Overall winner                                   Taurus

Bonus Prize                                       Sagitarius

A big thank you goes to our sponsors, which made this event successful: Bang  and Olufsen Wien, Hotel Punta and ACI Marina!
