Target Sailing Regatta 2015

Summary

Thursday, 29th October 2015 was the day of arrival and check-in for all 22 crews of the AYC Target Sailing Regatta 2015. On arrival each skipper reSkipper Briefing 1. Taggistered his crew and approved the boat checklist and then received a goodie bag for each boat. The crews were given a very warm welcome in AYC office in Vodice, tasting local brandy and figs from the region. These small refreshments were very welcome because it had rained heavily that day, wherever the crews had journeyed from. The dryer in the ACI Marina was heavily used, especially by crews who had sailed on Thursday!

At 19:30, the TSR was officially opened at the 10th Floor Sky Bar of the Hotel Punta. Mr. Frank Honan gave the opening speech and shared with all 22 skippers the introductory booklet. Subsequently, appetizers and drinks were served.

The Bistro “LEUT” served the crews an ample breakfast and then all the skippers gathered at 09:00 in front of the AYC office for the Skipper briefing. John Plumb assisted by his wife Liz was once again our race officer. The 22 yachts were divided into three classes: Class A was an open class for boats over 43 feet (Bavaria, Sun Odyssey and Beneteau First 47.7), Class B was the Elan 431 fleet and Class C was an open class for boats under 43 feet (Sun Odyssey, Hanse and Salona). The race procedures were discussed and the skippers had then the opportunity to ask questions.

At about 10:00, all yachts left Vodice marina, to be on time for the start, scheduled for about 11:30. Each class was started at an interval of about 10 minutes. The starting line was between the islands Tetovisnjak and Kablinac. The first Kornati Island, which had to be circumnavigated was Djzac. Then the first Target, with the coordinates N43 ° 42 53 / E15 ° 37 03, The island Raparasnjak was then rounded to starboard to lead back to the starting line and on the second Target with the coordinates N43 ° 43 62 / E15 ° 34 35. The crews then had time to take a small snack on the final leg of the race. The first yachts sailed through the finish line north of Skulj from about 15:00 onwards. “Ursa” from the Class B fleet won the 1st day race on corrected time. Overnight Class C was led by Sun Odyssey 43 “Suno” and Class A leaders were Sun Odyssey 54 “Macchiato”.

The restaurant quay on Žakan was the agreed meeting point for the fleet.  The tavern has a large terrace from where you could admire the harbour and other islands of the Kornati National Park.

Some very brave and hardy swimmers were sighted cooling down after a long day’s sail. Some sailors discussed the day’s events and exchanged experiences over a beer or two. From 19:30 an excellent buffet dinner was served in the tavern Žakan. In the meantime, Mr. Plumb announced the results of the first regatta day. The evening took a comfortable end with the Irish singer Danny Lynch accompanying us with music throughout the evening.

After a hearty breakfast at the tavern Žakan, there was again the Skipper briefing to go over the sailing route of the second day sailing. Mr. John Plumb explained the route for the second regatta day. Since the weather forecast was for stronger wind than the previous day, the Elan 431 fleet were instructed to start the race with one reef in the mainsail. The start line was close to the overnight harbour at Ravni Žakan. Again the 3 classes were started at intervals of 10 minute from 11:00.

The islands Skulj and Smokvica were passed to starboard to go to the first Target, coordinates N43 ° 43 62 E 15 ° 34 35. The next challenge was to pass the islands Kablinac and Duzac to port and then on to the second Target coordinates N43 ° 45 03 / E15 ° 39 34 and then to the finish line between the islands Tijat and Logorun. After a brisk start, during the day the wind gradually died and some yachts had difficulty reaching the finish line. However, positions at the final Target were used so that all boats were credited with a finish. On the second day’s race, Class A was led home by Bavaria 57 Adriatic Yachting, Class B winners were again Ursa and Class C was led by the Hanse 415 of Croatia Yachting. After correction of times for the yacht yardsticks, the Overall winner was Ursa. Many of the crew on Ursa were members of the “Vienna Pipes and Drums Pipe Band” and their presence during the weekend including the approach to the finish line could be heard with their performances on Scottish bagpipes!
